At Medan Makanan Boon Leong, there was a shop run by an old man with his wife that served fried oyster omelette. This oyster omelette has ingredients such as fresh oysters, potato starch, eggs, pork lard, oil, garlic, onion and a savoury sauce.

We watched him add the ingredients one by one mixed together in a large iron cast wok over a large fire. Then he cut portions out to be served with a garnish of chopped spring onion.

The air around the shop had a strong smell of oil and fried onions. We found the texture of the dish to be chewy and consistent. However, there were only 4 pieces of oyster which is less than usual portions of this dish in other restaurants.

Capitol Seafood serves cockles, cuttlefish, clams, sea snails, century eggs with ginger and many more. Most of the locals and tourists like to try the unique food here. The difference with this shop and other restaurants we visited is that we are able to sit on small stools and we eat our food beside the drain.

There is an option which we can choose to eat the cockles half cooked or well done. Moreover, the dishes will come with chili sauce which contains sweet sauce, coarse peanuts, lime juice and red birds eye chili. The process is we dig the shells to obtain the meat and then dip it with the sauce, this combination taste extremely good. There were small pails embedded in the middle of the table in which we can dispose the shells into. Their seafood was fresh with the smell of the ocean and seafood is cooked with salted water.

We also ordered a plate of rojak as well. Rojak is a kind of vegetable salad which served with fish sauce, cucumber slices, baked bean curd skin and crushed peanut. Botak’s curry noodle has a tradition of more than 60 years. The shop is decorated with various antiques and different kind of small bottles of liqueur.

The main ingredient in the curry is coconut milk, lemongrass and ground spices. The taste of lemongrass in Botak’s curry is very strong when compared with another curry. They did not use a lot of coconut milk in their curry so we would not feel too thick or greasy when eating the curry. The curry noodle is loaded with ingredients such as fried tofu, fish stick, cockles, fried tofu, sliced roasted meat and bean sprouts.

The curry noodle also served with a small plate of sambal chili sauce. The sambal chili sauce is cooked with small shrimp and it has a little salty taste which enhances the flavor of the curry noodle.

Hiap Joo Bakery is one of the most famous bakeries in Johor Bahru town and it has been serving people delicious pastries since 1919. Nowadays, the bakery sells buns and banana cakes, they have stopped the production of biscuits. It is usual to queue a long time just to buy their coconut bun and banana cakes. Their cakes and buns sell out quite fast after every baking session. They use the traditional way to bake the buns and cakes by using a wood fire oven. Hence, we noticed it is important that they control the fire when using this method as it might burn the pastries.

One box of banana cake which contains 10 slices of the cake costs only RM9.80. The banana cake was very moist and fluffy. In additional, it is not too sweet and has the strong fragrance of banana. Their coconut bun is also a popular item as it is soft and has a rich amount of coconut filling. The price of 5 coconut buns only costs RM3.80.

We found a coffee shop that serves traditional milk tea and coffee. The quality of the milk tea is quite smooth and nice. I saw the uncle who makes milk tea. At first, they put the tea powder into a jar which has a filter inside and pour hot water over it. After that, pour the tea to tradition the tea is poured into another Chinese tea pot to be mixed, then he adds two spoons of condensed milk and one spoon of evaporated milk.

We also tried the kaya butter toast. It is a well-known snack in Malaysia as it is served at every coffee shop in Malaysia. But the unique quality is that they use a traditional charcoal barbecue to grill the toast, it very rare people  nowadays are willing to have patience to cook the food this way. The taste of toast which uses the charcoal barbecue to grill smells different compared to other shops.

We also found a stall in this shop that makes curry puff pastries on the spot. The special food in this stall is otak-otak curry puff which we haven’t seen before. Otak - otak is processed seafood meat mixed with different spices. The taste of the curry puff is very crispy and not too spicy with a big chunk of filling. People who like otak-otak would surely enjoy this pastry. In a nutshell, the foods and beverage in this shop is highly recommended by us.
